Influence of
the Greeks
The influence of the Greeks upon Christianity
Began when the Apostle Paul stood before the council of
The highest judicial and legislative
council of ancient Athens
And told them about the
Religion of Jesus.
The learned Greeks noted many similarities
Between their philosophy
And the teachings of Jesus.
Both sought the emergence of the individual.
The Greeks taught intellectual liberalism leading to political freedom.
Jesus taught spiritual liberalism leading to religious liberty.
When they merged, these two ideas
Became a new charter
For Human freedom.
They initiated man's
Social, political, and spiritual
liberty.
Hunger
History is the record
Of man's age long struggle
To find food.
Primitive man
Only thought
When he was hungry.
Saving food
Was his first occurrence
Of self-denial
And self-discipline.
With the growth of society,
Food hunger ceased to be
The only incentive
For mutual association.
Numerous other sorts of hunger,
The realization of various needs,
All led to the closer association
Of mankind.
Today, society is top-heavy
With an overgrowth
Of invented human needs.
Western civilization
Is weighted down
With excessive
Human desires and longings
For material things.
Consequently,
Modern society
Is enduring the strain
Of one of its most dangerous phases
Of a highly complicated
Materialistic interdependence.
Language – the Emancipator
Historically,
The spread of civilization
Has been dependent upon language.
Live and growing languages
Insure the expansion
Of civilized thinking and planning.
During the early ages of Earth’s history
Important advances were made in language.
Today, there is great need
For further linguistic development
To facilitate the expression
Of evolving thought.
Dictionary
The early success
Of the Chinese
In building a real, united
And homogeneous nation
Very early in the racial history
Of Earth
Is due largely to the fact
That they spoke a common language.
Religion too
Must actively keep pace
With all social and scientific
Advances in civilization.
The spirit of religion is eternal,
But the form of its expression
Must be restated every time
The dictionary of human language
Is revised.
Intellectual Tools
Language is man's greatest
And most serviceable
Thinking tool.
Language never flourishes, however,
Until social groups acquire some leisure.
The tendency to play with language
Develops new words
And the association of ideas.
While very little progress
Has been made on Earth
Toward developing
An international language,
Much has been accomplished
By the establishment
Of international commercial exchange.
All international relations
Should be fostered,
Whether they involve language,
Trade, art, science,
Competitive sport, or religion.
A Universal Language
Language differences
Are the great barrier
To the extension of peace.
The conquest of dialects
Precedes the spread
Of a culture throughout a race,
Over a continent,
And to the whole world.
A universal language
Promotes peace,
Insures culture,
And augments happiness.
Even when the tongues of a world
Are reduced to a few,
The mastery of these
By the leading cultured people
Greatly influences the achievement
Of world peace and prosperity.
